Apakah
kamu mengetahui siapa itu Amelia Earhart? Jika tidak, silahkan terus
membaca! Amelia Earhart dilahirkan pada tanggal 24 Juli 1897. Dia adalah
salah satu pionir pilot–pilot wanita.
Sebelum penerbangannya, Amelia berkata: "I have a feeling that there is just about one more good flight left in my system and I hope this trip is it. Anyway when I have finished this job, I mean to give up long-distance "stunt" flying."
"Please know I am quite aware of the hazards...I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail their failure must be but a challenge to others."
Do you know who Amelia Earhart is? If not, read on! Aviator Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. She was one of the pioneers of women pilot. Her list of achievement was: In 1923 she became the 16th woman to be issued a pilot's license. She had a list of extraordinary achievements, like being the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928 and the first person to fly over both the Atlantic and Pacific. Unfortunately, in 1937, she mysteriously disappeared while trying to circumnavigate the globe from the equator.
Despite her achievements, she wasn’t born with love for aeroplanes. Amelia was 10 years old when she saw her first airplane at the Iowa State Fair and her famous quote was: "It was a thing of rusty wire and wood and not at all interesting..."
Her interest was absorbed by a peach basket paper hat purchased at the fair. She found her passion for aeroplanes during Long Beach air show in 1920, where took a plane ride that transformed her life. It was only 10 minutes, but when she landed, her heart was permanently claimed by the activities. She proceeded to do whatever it takes to fund her new passion, including working at a variety of jobs, from photographer to truck driver. Amelia Earhart immersed herself in her study. She read everything she could find on flying, and spent much of her time at the airfield. She cropped her hair short, in the style of other women aviators.
In the summer of 1921, Earhart purchased a second-hand Kinner Airster biplane painted bright yellow. A year later, on October 22, 1922, she flew her plane to 14,000 feet—the world altitude record for female pilots. Her next ambition was trying to fly solo across the Atlantic.
On May 20, 1932 she began the journey & managed to break several records at once, namely the first woman to fly the Atlantic solo and only person to fly it twice; the longest non-stop distance flown by a woman and a record for crossing in the shortest time. Later in 1935, Amelia began to formulate plans for an around-the-world flight. The flight would be two major firsts: she would be the first woman and she would travel the longest possible distance, circumnavigating the globe at its waist. Amelia departed from Los Angeles, California for Florida on May 21, 1937. Before her flight, she said "I have a feeling that there is just about one more good flight left in my system and I hope this trip is it. Anyway when I have finished this job, I mean to give up long-distance "stunt" flying."
On June 1, 1937 Amelia and her navigator Fred Noonan departed Miami, Florida bound for California by traveling around the world. Amelia reached Lae in New Guinea on June 29. At this point they had flown 22,000 miles and there were 7,000 more to go all over the Pacific. At 20:14 GMT the Itasca received the last voice transmission from Amelia giving positioning data. After the lost signal, the search and rescue attempt was launched, with President Roosevelt authorized the use of 9 naval ships and 66 aircraft at an estimated cost of over $4 million. But her death remained a mystery.
During her flight, Amelia regularly sent letters to George (her husband) at stops along her route. These were published in the book "Last Flight". On an end piece of the book is a note from her to George that says "Please know I am quite aware of the hazards... I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail their failure must be but a challenge to others."
